Singer and composer Marian Call became a fan of Firefly and Battlestar Galactica fairly recently, though she's been a certified geek since birth. Like many inspired fans, she turned her artistic bent toward her new obsessions. The result is a tribute album full of new and remastered songs, all dedicated to the spirit of the shows she loves and published exclusively by Quantum Mechanix and Black Market Beagles.

It all started when the team at QMx heard her song "It was Good for You Too," written about Yo-Saff-Bridge of Firefly fame. It was clear that Ms. Call's work was a step above the usual fan fare. And, more than anything else, we wanted to hear more – a whole lot more.

That's when we decided to commission and sponsor a whole new album, written, recorded, and produced especially for you, our customers. The CD will be available only from QMx, and only 1,000 hand-signed and numbered discs will be pressed. After the first print is gone, the tracks will only be available as a digital download.

The songs on Marian's new album "Got to Fly" are inspired by Firefly/Serenity and Battlestar Galactica, and by the fans and friends she's met by coming out of the closet as a nerd:

"Good Old Girl" is about Starbuck and the ships she flies; "Dark Dark Eyes" is for River, "It's Good to Have Jayne on Your Side" is, well, obvious. The spunky, unapologetic nerd anthem "I'll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It's Chic" will doubtless make you bob your head in awkward agreement as you listen.

We've included samples of some of the tracks to the right to give you a taste of what Marian has crafted for QMx and her beloved fellow geeks everywhere.

You can find Marian in person on her MySpace page or on Twitter. She will also be performing "Got to Fly" live at Creation Entertainment's Tribute to Firefly and Serenity and Official Stargate Con, November 22-23 in Burbank, CA. "Got to Fly" will be available for the first time at the show for just $15.95.

"Got to Fly" - "...a call from the dark side of the moon...the reception’s lousy...but the view’s beyond compare." Transmission blackout by a large body, and blocked light pollution from earth for a better view of the stars... Smart women are so cool. Ben & Andy, you can send me anything Marian makes. Ms. Call, if you ever have the urge to make the "Wanted Fan" variant of the song "Wanted Man" (lyrics in "Dream Park" by Niven, Pournelle, and Barnes), please send me a copy straight away.

Marian Call, QMx and the musicians behind 'Got To Fly'remind us ever, that Earth That Was or 'Verse that shall be, we will always long for music. This is a soulful and carefree tribute to our favorite Robin Hoodlums. Marian's music deserves to be played and replayed alongside those fourteen short stories and one big damn tale forever sung about the campfires of other worlds.

I can''t stop listening to her enchanting voice with those heartfelt and uplifting lyrics of hope and imagination. Close your eyes and see our favorite characters and ships as the melodies wisk you off somewhere between the ''Verse and an old space-warship. I had to listen on her Myspace page repeatedly while waiting for this cd to arrive in the mail. I hope she does another album of this type again. Thank you Marian and Qmx!

Marian Call''s imagination is Antares bound. All will bob in the waves: the exquisite vocals, the music; all tracks are excellent. "Don''t Try" is like freewheeling variations on Carole King''s "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" There''s pleasing ribbing in "It''s Good to Have Jayne on Your Side", "It was Good for You Too" and the facile "I''ll Still be a Geek...": three cheers for River! "Dark Dark Eyes" is quiescent, like CSNY''s "Helpless, Helpless". Thanks, Quantum Mechanix, for this fine CD, with its notes and photos. It is an unanticipated ray of sunshine, like an imaginary collaboration between Bernstein and Gershwin -- tasked with a Star Wars score. Aficionados may ride all the waves; for others, this will serve as a portal to the intricacies of the Serenity/Firefly stories. Had it been a run of 10,000, or more, these CDs would nonetheless have been instant collectibles -- like Cat Stevens'' LP soundtrack for "Harold and Maude"; this is Ms. Call''s "Mona Bone Jakon". (Its tracks will be accessible in digital form.) \
